My Trip to the Wyck House
By Ronukaya Lindsay

When my class visited the Wyck House on Friday I had fun. People used plants and vegetables to make medicine. The strawberries were good. The portraits were very nice. The lambs ears were very soft. The Polonia flowers were velvet. The children who lived at Wyck made finger puppets out of them. The Wyck people were Quakers. They did not like war. They helped everybody. They read out loud to their children. The Wyck house had 9 generations. We learned a lot at the Wyck House. The candlelights are in the house.
The End

Dear Ms. Chris and Ms. Missy,
I learned all what it was like during the 1700’s and 1800’s. It was like I was there myself. I could see it in my mind and see how Quaker families lived and how Quaker children learned to read and write. My favorite part of the trip was with Ms. Missy when we went to the tree and saw the purple flowers. They smelled as good as my Mom’s perfume. I liked when Ms. Chris helped us make whizzers- it was fun. Ms. Chris is a very helpful lady and Ms. Missy is a fun lady. I had a very good time with Ms. Chris and Ms. Missy.

Dear Ms. Chris and Ms. Missy,
When my class visited the Wyck house last Friday I had fun. I still have that plant you gave me and I used a piece of it to help my brother’s cut and now the cut is gone.

And when my big brother had a cold I told him he could eat the plant and he would feel better he did not want to eat it because he didn’t want to go to school.

And the polonia I made a show with them. Thank you very much.

Dear Ms. Chris and Ms. Missy,
When my class visited Wyck house last Friday I had fun and we all want to come back. I liked the peppermint leaves. When we were going to leave, I found a horse chestnut and it was open. The lambs ears were soft and it felt like my pillow. The strawberries were made out of strawberry flowers. The water pump got water from the well long ago. The rose garden had a lot of roses and vegetables. The polonia flowers you can make into a puppet. The kids had to take care of the farm animals. Medicine was made out of the lambs ears.
I would like to come back.
Love: Imani

Dear Ms. Missy and Ms. Chris,
When we went to the Wyck House I learned a lot about the Wyck house. I wish I had a baby calf too! I had lots of fun. When we went into the garden, it felt like a secret garden. I want to thank you a whole lot for all the things you showed and taught us. Ms. Chris, I like the toys we made and the ones inside the house. I would like it if you would write back a note and answer a question. Will the upstairs ever be fixed up like a museum too? If it is I might come back again. If you’re too busy you don’t have to write back. I loved the strawberries. I liked the flowers, the smokehouse, the ice house, peppermint leaves, lambs ear, portraits. I loved it all. That’s about all I have to say!

Dear Ms. Chris and Ms. Missy,
When my class visited the Wyck house last Friday I learned that back then they used a leaf for medicine. I like the polonia flowers. My favorite fruit is strawberries. I like the water pump. The portraits looked like Cliveden. I like the children’s furniture. Anyway, like I was saying, thank you two for showing us a lot of things Ms. Missy and Ms. Chris.
Your friend,
Ramir Handy

Dear Mrs. Missy and Mrs. Chris,
When my class visited Wyck House last Friday I enjoyed the time I had at the Wyck house these remaining things are all that we learned, saw and did there. First we got there and talked about nature when you first come in. Then we separated in two groups girls and boys, girls had Ms. Missy, boys had Ms. Chris. When the girls went with Ms. Missy we sat on small benches and talked about flowers and trees and Ms. Missy picked up horse chestnuts and said that squirrels love them and also bury them too. Then we went to a tree with polonia flowers on them, purple polonia. Then we went to a different tree Ms. Missy pointed out to us that a red woodpecker had pecked a hole in the tree but the woodpecker was not there to see, Ms. Missy just told us what color the woodpecker was. Then we walked to a small garden and we saw carrots and others, then Ms. Missy gave us a big strawberry to eat, they were nice and sweet. Then we went into a really big garden with all sorts and kinds of flowers in it. Then the girls went to sit on a white bench.

When my class visited Wyck house I saw vegetables, herbs, medicine. We even saw Polonia flowers that people used when they were little. We also saw pictures that were very old and we saw toys that little kids used to play with when they were young. We got to feel lambs ears. We got to smell a peppermint leaf. We also got to eat strawberries that was very sweet. Then after we ate strawberries we went to a different section and saw roses that was about to pop out and look very pretty. Some of us even got to see all types of objects like horse chestnuts. And all of us got to see a water pump that people had to use long, long ago. Then at the end we made whizzers that were real cool.
Thank you from: Tázhane

Dear Ms Chris and Ms. Missy,
Thank you for letting us come, we learned a lot. The strawberries were good. And I learned that every child had a animal to take care of and I like how the strawberries were in the rose garden. I liked the lambs ear because it heals your cuts, scaps and it is medicine. The polonia flowers smelled so good I could eat them. And a silhouette is a person that draws another person’s face. A chamber pot was under the chair. A portrait is just like a silhouette but shows the person’s whole face. The children had very small and nice furniture. There is a big clock and something big that was shaking. And the new classroom for people to work in. The water pump, and the grownup furniture it looked nice and there were different colors, like orange, tan, brown and even plaid chairs.

Thank you I would like to come again.

When my class visited the Wyck house last Friday, I thought it was a mansion by looking at the side of the house. Then I walked in and it was a house not little but big, a big, pretty white house. The lavender flowered tree was very pretty and the garden, the tulips, were pretty too. The other was very very pretty – gravel on the ground, flowers, bushes, roses, - a place where you can sit and see the view. When we went to where the vegetable patch was it had vegetable seeds everywhere in the soil lined up, and the leaves that smell like mints. It was fun when we played with the toys and saw the portraits and even a grandfather clock and the kitchen and the dining room table. It was fun coming to the Wyck house and I want to thank you for all the things that you did for us so I want to make this letter for you, to say thank you.
Thank you,
Ciaca

Trip to Stenton Mansion

By Sean Ivery

My trip to Stenton Mansion was great. James Logan owned the house, and also had some slaves. The house was separate from the kitchens and the barn. When James Logan had to go to the bathroom, he had to go outside, or use an old-fashioned chamber pot. This took place in the 1700’s. James Logan’s servants had to do whatever they were told, or else they would be whipped. Men burned down other houses in the area, but they were stopped from burning down Stenton.

Dear Ms. Missy and Ms. Chris,
When my class came to the Wyck house last Friday, I was the best in the class room. Remember when you said you loved me. Remember when I almost got the ball in the hole.

Remember when I got the spinning top working. Ms Missy, I like the strawberries. The strawberries were the best strawberries. Dear Ms. Chris I like when you let me touch things in the house.

On my trip to Stenton Mansion I got on the bus and talked to my friends, and when we got there my conversation was over. Then my group met a man dressed up as James Logan and the other group met a woman who was dressed up as a maid. My group went in the mansion first. First we saw a room that the guests waited in. Then we saw a room where he wrote messages and notes to people. Then we saw a room where he invented new things and built them. Then we went upstairs and saw the Yellow Room. The Yellow Room had a crib, a table with tea and teacups and toys in the crib. I saw the Blue Room: it had a book shelf with no books. James Logan had nearly 3000 books, and this would have taken twenty-two bookshelves. I also saw the kids’ room, it had a fish tank with divers in it. I saw the kitchen, and heard about a lady who saved the Stenton house. Then we went to the barn and I saw equipment they used to chop down trees and shoes for walking on snow. Then my group rang a bell and ran a race and the girls cheated and ran!

When we went to Stenton Mansion, the first thing we did was get on the bus. When we got there, the people split us up into groups. My group went to a barn. We did chores in the barn. When we came out of the barn, we went to the kitchen: it had fake foods. When we came out of the kitchen, we went into the house. We went into the bedrooms, and we also went into a dining room. My grandpa said I might be family with James Logan. At the end, my group and the other group had a race. One team ran and the other team walked.

My trip to Stenton Mansion was fun. I saw pictures of famous people. I saw a picture of James Logan. I saw a picture of William Penn. Then our guide, who was pretending to be James Logan, let us do some chores. Then we went into the barn. I saw a milking and some shoes that people wore in the snow. Then we had a kind of war where some of us were walking and some were running, to see who can have the most land. Imani, Tazahnae and I won. Then we went back to Anna Lane Lingelbach Elementary School.

At Stenton we learned about a lady who saved the house. Then we went into the barn and saw pictures and saw things the servants used to do chores with. We came out of the barn and the tour man let us ring the bell on the way back. Then we went into the little house where the other half of the class was. Then Alexis acted as a colonist and traded with the Indians. After that we went and had a race with the Indians outside. The colonist and the Indians had a race. Ronukaya, Tazhane and Imani raced Richard for the Indians’ land. Then the colonists cheated and the class on the Indians’ side was mad and said that the class on the colonist side had cheated. Then it was time to go, so we got on the bus and waved bye to the two tour people, who were dressed up as Phoebe and James Logan and rode back to school.
