Germantown's story is America's story in a nutshell. Begin your exploration of Germantown's history at the Society's Museum. Learn about the first German settlement in America, the nation's earliest "urban village," and the nation's first commuter suburb. Find out why the British and Americans fought a Revolutionary War battle here and why President George Washington later returned to live in Germantown. Hear how members of our community have stood up for human rights from the first written protest against slavery in 1683 to the activists of today. Discover why thousands of African Americans, Irish and Italians made their home in northwest Philadelphia. For more in-depth research, extend your visit to include the Society's Library and Archives. See original photographs, maps, deeds, newspapers, and family and organizational records from Germantown, Mount Airy, and Chestnut Hill. Find guidebooks, maps, and posters on sale in the Visitors Center Shop. The Museum and Library are open Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Group tours are available at other times by appointment. The Visitors Center is open Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
